In the summer of 2005, the pioneer surgeon known as the father of transplantation thought he'd finally found a way to the field's Holy Grail -- transplanting an organ without subjecting the patient to potentially deadly anti-rejection drugs. To test his ambitious new protocol, Dr. Thomas Starzl needed ten patients. Katy Miller would be the first.
Smart, beautiful and sick with an illness guaranteed to destroy her liver, Katy agreed to a transplant using part of her sister's liver. But Starzl's long-standing dream backfired. Katy's case touched off a firestorm of controversy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and put into question the soundness of live-donor liver transplants.
A Transplant for Katy depicts the dramatic efforts to save a star patient -- and the reputation of the world's leading transplant center, where patients from as far as Egypt and Libtua came in search of a miracle.

How very sad but important book which illustrates how the medical system can go careening off the rails. As a health care professional, I found this very interesting but very frustrating. BUT as a distant cousin of Katy, I had no idea this was happening and would have advised her differently, if I had known. The problem with a very large family that is spread all over the country is not knowing. So my sadness prevents me from giving it a five star rating. Also this is written in layman's terms so it can be understood by all. Egos, egos, egos, how the selfish ego can harm the innocent.Product details

A Transplant for Katy edition by Luis Fabregas Professional Technical eBooks Reviews
The story of Katy Miller is used to discuss many controversial issues in the field of liver transplantation as well as draw fairly accurate portraits of the personalities involved.
I loved this book. I was involved in her surgery and assisted the surgeons during her case. I did not know at the time, why Dr. Starlz was so involved, now I do. I have worked along side all the doctors that were mentioned in this book and it is very sad to me to know that this all went on behind the scene. I pray for her family and I also pray for Dr. Starzl. This book opens up the eyes to a very greedy person. Read it and you will see who.
I read this book out of curiosity. The fact that it was written by a nonmedical person is impressive. There appears to be some bias, but I suppose it is expected. The author describes a sequence of sad events that can't help but bring a tear to the eye. My sympathies to her family and friends.
This is an amazing story and very helpful personally since I had a liver transplant a couple years ago. This book is really fantastic for providing an overview of the development of liver transplants in this country, and for explaining and illustrating the issues involved in live donor cases. A must read for anyone wanting to know more about liver transplants!
Excellent book laying out the history of transplant surgery, and the men at the heart of it all. Compelling and sad, because you already know how it ends. But - it cleared up a bunch of "blanks" in my understanding of what happened at Pittsburgh that tarnished their golden image. Thank you for the balanced insight.
As a person who has benefited from a liver transplant l found the book both enlightening and frightening. A must read for all the people who have benefited from organ transplants so they may know of the sacrifices others have made on their behalf. We forget that today's success is only possible by examining yesterday's failures.
I found this book both informative and enlightening. The author describes the heartache of transplant rejection, and the unmitigated joy of the many transplant successes that can change a life, sometimes forever.
What's unique about the book for me, is that the author also describes the political and financial pressures on hospitals and surgeons to perform and produce. I think much of the population is not aware that these pressures are real, causing some medical decisions to be unduly influenced by these pressures, sometimes to the detriment of the patient.
IMHO this book isn't particularly well written -needs editing, like this review- but still is well worth the read to better understand both transplant surgery, and the political/financial pressures on transplant surgeons and hospitals.
My favorite part of the whole book is that the innovative, brillant, and dedicated lead transplant surgeon never compromised patient care despite considerable pressure and outright harassment from above. He was even locked out of the transplant wing that he founded and was named in his honor! Interested in what happened next ? Read the book ))
